Founded in 1960, the Chester Gap Volunteer Fire Department was established to provide emergency services to a growing community and has remained dedicated to that mission ever since. The department's first Fire Chief, Walter Herman Williams Sr., and first President, Merritt Greeley, helped build the foundation of an organization that continues to serve with pride and dedication today.
Before the department was fully established and its station became operational, early organizational meetings were held at a local gathering place known as Chester Gap Grocery. While emergency calls were not responded to from this location, it served as an important meeting place where community members discussed plans, ideas, and the development of what would become the Chester Gap Volunteer Fire Department.
Since its founding, the department has operated from its current location in Chester Gap, serving generations of residents and visitors throughout the surrounding communities. The department's establishment was made possible through the generosity and vision of Merritt Greeley, who donated the land on which the department was founded. His contribution provided the foundation for what would become a vital community organization dedicated to protecting lives and property throughout the region.
Throughout its history, the department has experienced many significant milestones and achievements. One of the most notable advancements was strengthening emergency response capabilities by introducing continuous paid staffing and professional EMS coverage. This accomplishment reflects the department's ongoing commitment to meeting the evolving needs of the community while maintaining its tradition of volunteer service.
Today, CGVFD provides fire suppression, emergency medical response, rescue services, public safety education, and community outreach programs while continuing to evolve to meet the needs of our region.
